The Contract

By Michael Flanakin @ 6:57 PM :: 2502 Views :: Action / Advneture, Thriller, Crime :: Digg it!

The ContractJohn Cusack isn't really an actor I associate with action movies, but he did a good job in The Contract. Of course, his character wasn't really intended to be your typical hero; he was supposed to be an average Joe. I thought the back-story about the father/son bonding trip to the woods was a nice touch, albeit a tad cheesy. Either way, the movie was better than I expected. Well, to tell the truth, I didn't expect much of anything. As I kind of hinted at, this one isn't overly action-oriented, so I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys a mild action movie. My only complaint was the personable nature of the hitman. Not that I'm saying a hitman has to be cold-hearted, but it just seems contradictory. At the same time, I liked the fact that he was that way, so maybe that's not really a complaint, but just something unexpected I had to get past.

The Mist

By Michael Flanakin @ 5:10 PM :: 2377 Views :: Horror, Sci-fi / Fantasy, Thriller :: Digg it!

The MistI expected The Mist to be a bit cheesy. Well, not the whole movie, but the sci fi back-story. I was glad it didn't turn out that way, tho. The movie was pretty good. It reminded me of Feast -- except for the fact that this one wasn't written by horny teenagers. The best thing about the movie is how it did a good job of bringing you into it. The movie was also mildly emotional. I say mildly because, while I felt involved, I guess it wasn't enough to really move me the way I thought it should've. Aside from that, there was definitely a dramatic ending. I was half expecting the movie to end
with the group driving off into the mist.
I'm not sure if that would have been a better ending or not. I guess I'd have complained because I would've wanted more. The way it went down was definitely an interesting twist. I kind of saw it coming, but wouldn't say it was horribly obvious. The only other thing I'd say is that I wouldn't have done the same thing.

Rendition was one of those movies that makes you think. You want security, but at what cost? How much are you willing to give up to ensure the safety of your children? What if I told you your rights could be completely violated in order to protect the rest of us? A double-edged sword, isn't it? Because of this, I really liked Rendition. The premise was a lot like The Kingdom, but the story went a completely different way. This one should hit US citizens a little harder, given the nature of what happens. If you liked The Kingdom, you should like this one, too. The only cinematic difference is that The Kingdom is more action-oriented.

If you liked Rendition, I'd recommend The Kingdom.

The Kingdom

By Michael Flanakin @ 5:26 PM :: 2747 Views :: Action / Advneture, Drama, Thriller :: Digg it!
The Kingdom did a very nice job of showing both sides of what seems to be a never-ending conflict. Of course, there's no telling what life is really like in the Middle East without actually being there. I don't believe the sensationalist media and movies are no different, but let that not take away from their entertainment value. As I insinuated, most of these types of movies are one-sided, so this one was quite refreshing. Beyond that, it was a relatively good story with good action sequences. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes any of the action movies of late.

Saw 4

By Michael Flanakin @ 2:44 PM :: 1099 Views :: Horror, Thriller :: Digg it!
What the...? For some reason, I walked out of Saw 4 wondering what I was missing. The movie was great, but I'm not sure what happened when and where the heck the body in the beginning was from. I like how creative the writers have been in ensuring each sequel smoothly fits into the previous line, but this one seemed a bit complicated. Looks like we'll see another one, tho, so perhaps that will help clear it up. Nonetheless, if you liked the previous ones, you'll like this one. Just to prepare you, the second scene is almost over-the-top gory. Not the type of violent gore you've come to expect, tho. I didn't really have a problem with it, I just questioned why we were even seeing it; it eventually made sense, tho.

Shoot 'Em Up

By Michael Flanakin @ 6:22 PM :: 1011 Views :: Action / Advneture, Comedy, Thriller :: Digg it!

I expected Shoot 'Em Up Mobile-ready link to be a somewhat stupid... well, shoot 'em up movie, like Smokin' Aces Mobile-ready link. I never thought it was going to be as funny as it was. This was a total man's movie. Think sex, violence, and... wait, that's about it. The whole time, I kept thinking about Crank Mobile-ready link. Both of these movies were very similar. There is one thing Shoot 'Em Up had that Crank didn't: the questionably perfect mix of sex and violence. I won't say any more, tho. You'll just have to see it for yourself. Of course, you'll definitely be rolling your eyes throughout the movie. You might expect this with some of the action movies of late. Nothing too over-the-top, tho, so it's still enjoyable. As a matter of fact, this one's better than Crank. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a good action movie. The comedy just makes it even better.

If you liked Shoot 'Em Up, I'd recommend Crank.

The Invasion

By Michael Flanakin @ 10:46 PM :: 949 Views :: Sci-fi / Fantasy, Thriller :: Digg it!

I didn't really think about this before watching the movie, but The Invasion Mobile-ready link is just another zombie movie. Granted, it's an new, interesting take on zombies, but a zombie movie nonetheless. I'd probably say this is more of a "smart" zombie movie. By that, I mean the "zombies" aren't just looking for brains to feed on, but have goals of taking over the world. Who doesn't nowadays, right?

The Invasion had a feel of 28 Days Later Mobile-ready link mixed with another movie I can't quite put my fingers on. If you get a chance, I definitely think you should check it out; even if you don't like zombie movies. Like I said, this one isn't simply about running away from dead people. The only thing I didn't really like about it was the quick scene covering the cure. These movies seem to speed thru the recovery period like it wasn't even a big deal. These scenes are almost anticlimactic, but I can't quite imagine a better way to cover it. Maybe it's just me, tho.

I would be interested in a sequel for this one. With the premise for why the cure was possible, a sequel has a chance to be better than the original. This wasn't really hinted at, but it was the first thing I thought of in that last scene. I won't really touch on why I feel this way so not to ruin it for you, but we'll see.

The Hills Have Eyes 2

By Michael Flanakin @ 7:40 PM :: 944 Views :: Horror, Thriller :: Digg it!

The Hills Have Eyes 2 Mobile-ready link wasn't as good as the first one Mobile-ready link, but it was still decent. I questioned the beginning a lot, but it picked up in the end. If you liked the first, but feel like walking out on this one after 30 minutes, try to stick it out. The acting is poor and they're trying to recreate something that will probably never be successful at, but at least it gets better. And, as we have all come to expect in sequels, we have the obligatory more-to-come last scene. I have no idea if they'll make a third, but they like having the opportunity. I doubt they will. I think it was more for effect.

The story behind this one wasn't as good, which is part of why I didn't like it as much. One thing I thought was interesting was how these two movies are all about making the nerdy guy the hero. I question the word "hero" in this sense, but at least he's the protagonist. I could probably comment on a lot of the personalities, but I'll leave that out so not to give anything away.

The bottom line is, if you watched the first and enjoyed it, check this one out. Force yourself to stick around past the first half, tho, because it takes a while to get into.

If you liked The Hills Have Eyes 2, I'd recommend Hostel Mobile-ready link and Turistas Mobile-ready link. Hell, there are probably half a dozen or more other horror movies Mobile-ready link I'd recommend, too.

Bourne Ultimatum

By Michael Flanakin @ 10:39 AM :: 1022 Views :: Action / Advneture, Drama, Thriller :: Digg it!

Bourne Ultimatum Mobile-ready link was a good finale to the Bourne series (Identity Mobile-ready link, Surpremacy Mobile-ready link). This one definitely kept up with the fast-paced nature of the previous two and perhaps even stepped it up a notch. I will say Live Free or Die Hard Mobile-ready link still topped it as far as action is concerned, tho. Of course, some of this was perhaps more believable than Die Hard. There were a few parts of the movie I felt like weren't detailed enough. There seemed to be a moment between Jason and Nicky where Nicky knew something, but was holding back. I wanted to know what that was about. I was almost expecting her to bring up some relationship the two had. Then again, I imagine that would've come up in the previous movie if there was one. The only complaint I had about this one was the camera work. Just like Transformers Mobile-ready link, the camera work in Bourne Ultimatum was very shaky. This was very hard to follow some of the close-quarters action sequences. I hope Hollywood gets over this style soon. I'm not holding my breath, tho.

1408 Mobile-ready link was an interesting movie. The ending wasn't quite what I expected, tho. I'm not quite sure what to make of it, but I guess that's a good thing. If you're into horror/thriller movies, you should definitely give this one a chance. It's not your everyday horror, tho; I'd say it's more of a thriller than anything. Either way, it was good.
